Meals on a Budget

Things to do in Edinburgh tomorrow evening?

Hi, I have a job interview the next day but arrive in Edinburgh about 6-7pm. I am staying in a doss house on the Royal Mile, but what can I do in the evening, alone, in this area? Is there anything that I might be able to visit/ wander round, bearing in mind I am on my own and have never been north of the M4 before?

What about a good place for a simple, cheap evening meal?
